Work as a Place of Power

Work as a Place of Power
Each day the world is at work. Work is a means of
survival. Your income pays for food, shelter, and other
necessities. Work is also a place of power where you have a
wealth of opportunities to increase your self-knowledge and
self-esteem. At work, you can grow by embracing the
lessons about power that are available to you. I am a
personal and professional coach. In my work with clients, I
see them constantly presented with situations and
interactions in the workplace that involve power. One may
have a boss who underestimates their abilities and
frequently belittles them. Another may find they are
frequently out of step, as if everyone else is playing a
different game. Another may find work running their life.
They may be way out of balance and everything and everyone
around them is affected. When a client is in such a
situation, I work with them to look beyond the surface and
ask what they can learn from the situation.

You can do the same. If you have problems at work, put the
focus squarely on you. This way, you immediately take
control. This does not mean you can control others'
actions, but there is power in commanding your own life.

FOCUS ON YOUR POWER AT WORK

The key to prosperity and fulfillment at work is reclaiming
your personal power. It is who you are, not what an
organization or society want you to become that is the
means for creating the work life and success you seek.
Personal power at work is the ability to perceive your
environment and the players in it from your own, unique
point of view and to act from your center as you make
choices and decisions.

Perceiving your environment requires an ability to see
things as they really are. You must understand the game you
are playing in. You can't succeed at baseball, playing by
football's rules. What are the rules of the game that you
are in? If you don't know, start observing your workplace.
What is the culture of your organization? What goals are
focused on? Who gets rewarded? Then, turn your focus on
you. Are your skills a fit with the game you are in? Are
you playing by the rules? Do you like the rules? I'm not
recommending mindless conformity here. It's about
awareness. You have to know the game before you can play it
effectively. Each of us has our own individual voice in
the world. To find that voice and express it is the meaning
of fulfillment. Finding your voice is not an easy task.
But, it is a journey worth taking. For as you express your
unique voice in the world, all kinds of possibilities open
up and you can fly as you never have before. What is your
destiny? This question confounds many. The clues to your
destiny lie in your inspiration. Finding your destiny is
not just about you. The world needs your voice. Won't the
world be a better place with the real you in it? Finding
your destiny is a form of service - to yourself, to those
around you and to the world.

Many things at work interfere with the ability to act from
your center. How many times do negative emotions,
insecurities, fatigue or misperceptions unfavorably cloud
the decisions you have to make? The stress and time demands
you face make it easy to lose your focus. If you strive for
balance among the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual
aspects of your life, you will increase your ability to act
from your center. Also, it is important to acknowledge that
you have choice in every situation. Choice keeps the power
in your hands. There may be consequences that flow from a
choice you make, but no one has the power to take that
choice from you.

EXERCISING YOUR POWER AT WORK

When you face a difficult situation in the workplace, ask
yourself:

• How are you responding to the situation?
• Is your response based on facts? Is it purely emotional?
• What is in your power to change?
• What is the particular learning for you here? How can it
help you grow?

Once you've answered these questions thoughtfully, you are
ready to develop your response to the situation. Think out
what you want to do, what the possible consequences of your
actions are, what actions you will take. From here, go
forward. Value the learning from the situation. Acknowledge
the opportunity it presents to you.

Taking situations into your own hands and responding to
them increases your personal power. You can have fun with
this. You can grow. You can become the arbiter of your own
life rather than a target for the hapless games of others.

How to Magnetize Your Target Market

How to Magnetize Your Target Market
I'm sure you've heard over and over the importance of
having a "target market," a specific group of people who
share similar qualities and have a problem that you and
your business can solve. Now, this is important because you
want to have a clear message that speaks directly to
potential clients, which has them saying, "Yes! That's what
I want! I'll hire you NOW."

The importance of this is very true because we honestly
can't serve everyone. If you feel resistance (a.k.a. fear)
beginning to bristle, perhaps because you believe you'll
lose business by not being willing to work with everyone,
just pause for a moment and ask yourself, "Would I really
want to work with everyone?" My guess is your answer would
be no because everyone is not your energetic match. Just
bring to mind for a moment someone you really can't stand.
Now, imagine your whole business filled with this
person-every client/customer. Kind of shifts the whole "I
want to work with everyone" perspective, right?

Understanding who your energetic match is is the secret to
magnetizing your target market. This is what we're going to
do together today, my friend.

First, let's look at why, if you recognize that having a
target market is important, do you resist it? Well, after
having coached with tons of entrepreneurs around this, I've
come up with what's missing in most of the traditional
"target market" talk:

It only addresses the outer. (And this doesn't get us
excited, but rather has us feeling limited.)

When asked to define your target market, you may have been
asked in the past to get clear about your target market's:
Age Gender Marital Status Occupation Problem they
need solved

Let's pause for a second...does this really guarantee to
help us get narrow and specific so our message stands out
to what they need? Well, not necessarily. I bet we could
get a room full of: 35 years old female single
nurses

...and they aren't all going to have the same problem.

So what we're really interested in is the situation your
target market needs solved and we make YOU the situation
solver. Then we tap into the energy that is the essence of
attraction between you and whom you WANT to work with.

It's this "inner part" that moves you into the excitement
of creating your "Ideal Client" rather than just "Target
Market."

You can begin to better understand who your ideal client is
by asking yourself: What are the qualities of my ideal
client? What jazzes my ideal client? What does my ideal
client expect from me?

Really, just let the answers to these questions flow and
FEEL what would have you excited about working with this
person. Answering these questions connects you to a
situation or type of person with whom you are a natural
energetic match. This way, you're drawn together like
magnets and your ideal client recognizes right away that
working with you is a must. They just feel it.

Golden Nugget: Your ideal client is usually someone like
you who shares your journey. However, they're in a
different, earlier phase of the journey. To understand this
truly is gold: when your ideal client is looking to hire
you, they're looking for a solution to their situation or
problem. They recognize you've been where they are and have
successfully made the change. This ignites belief that they
can do it too. It's a reassurance they're investing their
time, energy, and money in the right person and process.
It's easy for you to talk to them because it's kind of like
talking to an earlier version of yourself, yes? Just think
about what you would've wanted to hear.

So when you get clear about who your ideal client is, and
can effectively share the experience of your journey
(whether in person or in your marketing materials), in a
way that ignites the energetic match that the two of you
naturally are, then you've just accelerated the whole
process of bringing on new clients. (This is the whole
point of having a target market in the first place).

Call-to-Action:

Focus on the qualities of your ideal client: what jazzes
them (hint: it will jazz you, too!) and what they expect
from you. This sets you up to be an energetic match.

Get clear about your journey. What did it take for you to
get where you are? Be willing to share it. You'll be
setting up an automatic path of connection and
understanding. You'll be confident in your work because you
both recognize you've done it and now it's their turn to do
it, too.

Give yourself permission to work with your ideal client.
Nothing good comes from working with non-ideal people out
of fear. You deserve to be jazzed in your business-it's the
magic water for continuous business (and income!) growth.

How To Post Ads On Craigslist Step by Step

How To Post Ads On Craigslist Step by Step
A lot of you I'm sure have probably heard how much success
someone in a business can have just by posting some ads
daily on a site called Craigslist. If you're unfamiliar
with Craigslist, and have no idea what it is let me first
explain it to you and how it works. Craigslist was designed
so people could go there and post ads on just about
anything completely free of charge. They have a number of
different topics ranging from jobs all the way to online
dating.

You can find just about anything on there that you're
looking for. Craigslist is one of the most visited sites on
the web. It gets millions of hits each and ever month. So
you can see why this site is so powerful if you understand
how to use it correctly. So how do you post ads with
success and see results?

Step one - First you will want to create about 20 - 30
email accounts. A good place to do so would be places such
as hushmail.com, yahoo.com, and gmail.com. All of these
allow you to create emails very quickly and with almost no
effort.

Step two - Create 5 Craigslist accounts. You will want to
create an account so when you post ads you do not have to
verify your ad. This will help speed up the time it takes
to post ads. Always remember when posting on Craigslist you
want to be fast.

Step three - Create 20 - 30 different URL's. I suggest you
buy a domain name from godaddy for a few dollars and then
create a bunch of sub domain names. Godaddy will allow you
to create up to 90 sub domain names with using just one
domain name. So you could make up to 90 different URL's if
you had the time, but you only need about 20 - 30.

Step four - Write up a very short ad. Do not try to sell
something just make it short and sweet our only goal is to
get people to click on our link. Once you made your ad body
create one headline to use with it.

Step five - Ok so now we have our ad body and headline.
Next log into just one of your accounts you made.

Step six - Now post the same ad body and headline in at
least 20 different cities. Make sure in each new city you
post in you use a new URL and one of the 20 - 30 email
addresses we made up.

This is very important make sure you change your IP address
at least every 5 - 10 ads you post to craigslist. If you do
not do this you might as well not even post your ads.

After your done posting give it about 15 - 30 minutes and
then you can check to see how many of your ads where posted
with success. If you did it correct and followed my
directions step by step you should see great results.

15 Items for Your Resume "To Do" List

15 Items for Your Resume "To Do" List
Do you want to create a more "user friendly" resume to
submit to recruiters and hiring authorities? Here are 15
suggestions for composing more compelling and targeted
resumes.

1. Create a resume headline. Headlines sell newspapers.
They can also sell job search candidates. Hiring managers
don't really read resumes, but rather scan them to
determine the candidate's fit for the job. Help make that
fit more obvious by creating a resume headline that tells
the reader your strengths such as Award Winning Television
Executive Producer, Entry Level Public Relations Assistant,
or Information Technology Product Developer.

2. Create a profile section. Hiring managers tend to focus
on the top third of the first page of the resume. They may
only read on if your profile grasps their attention
quickly. Communicate your value-add in the profile section.
List powerful and consistent examples of how you help the
companies you support make money, save money, save time
grow the business, and maintain the business.

3. List core competencies. One of the first things hiring
managers will be looking for is a sense if you have the
skill set necessary to do the job. Your areas of expertise
should be displayed prominently early on in the resume. Try
to use the keywords, or phrases that are important to your
job function and industry. If you are not sure what the
appropriate keywords are, look for consistent wording and
phrases on job postings for positions in your field to
better align your qualifications with potential job
specifications.

4. Include brief descriptions of the companies you have
worked for. For each organization you were part of, include
information on the company including the industry the
company represents, size, and revenues if publicly-held.
The company description is particularly important if you
have worked for new, small, or lesser-known firms. Refer to
the company's website and "about us" page to secure
additional data for your description.

5. Discuss operating budgets and staff size. Include
information on budget and staff size to help your reader
gain a better understanding of the scope of your
responsibilities.

6. Minimize descriptions of job tasks. While it's important
to convey a brief overview of job tasks, this information
does little to differentiate candidates. Many candidates
have experience doing similar job tasks. What makes them
unique and memorable is the accomplishment within the task.
Spend no more than 3-6 lines discussing the job tasks
associated with each position and save space for more
valuable accomplishment-focused information.

7. Maximize use of accomplishments. Employers are
interested in reading about your accomplishments. Past
accomplishments are a better predictor of success than a
discussion of job tasks. Accomplishment statements are
those that clearly indicate how you help the companies you
support make money, save money, save time, grow the
business, and maintain the business.

8. Group like accomplishments into categories. After you
develop your accomplishment statements, look for trends
within your achievements. Do some accomplishments represent
increases in sales while others represent decreases in
costs or process improvements? By grouping accomplishments
by theme, and creating category headings within the
chronology for each position, you can better communicate
your personal brand and value add and make it easier for
your reader to follow the accomplishments achieved within
each key critical competency.

9. List appropriate hobbies. Only include hobbies when they
are relevant to your job search or in synch with you target
audience. For example, an IT technician might mention his
knack for fixing up old cars and an event planner might
mention her involvement in community theater. Hobbies can
also be used effectively to counter potential age bias. For
example, the over 50 candidate might mention that she is a
marathon runner to imply overall stamina, health, and
fitness and to dissuade any bias that as an older worker
the candidate lacks the necessary energy to do the job.

10. Include appropriate volunteer experience. Again,
include what is relevant and discuss the competencies
gained from the volunteer experience that elevate your
candidacy. For example, a career changer seeking an entrée
into the healthcare field might discuss the volunteer work
she did in a hospital or a technology professional might
mention teaching computer skills to disadvantage youths.

11. List relevant professional affiliations. Include
relevant and recent professional affiliations and make
special mention of any leadership roles held within these
organizations.

12. Report employment history by years. Hiring managers
generally expect to see the years you were employed by a
company, not the months and years. Exceptions to this
include candidates who have less than one year of tenure in
a position or students reporting on summer employment or
internships.

13. Focus on past 10-15 years of employment. Generally,
hiring authorities are more interested in recent
accomplishments than those achieved over a decade ago.
Weight information on your documents towards the past 10-15
years and minimize the amount of space dedicated to earlier
work experience.

14. Include graduation dates. Sometimes job seekers omit
their graduation date on their resume to mitigate the
potential of someone discovering their age and possibly
using this information to bias their candidacy. But by
omitting the date, you may actually be calling more
attention to the very issue you are trying to hide because
employers may question why you chose to omit the graduation
date. They may even assume that you are older than you
actually are.

15. Omit "references available upon request". It is
understood that candidates will provide references when
asked. Save the space for more compelling,
accomplishment-driven information.

Keeping Resumes Relevant Using Certified Writers

Keeping Resumes Relevant Using Certified Writers
Working with new clients on a regular basis keeps me
energized. I love learning about their different careers
and the paths they have followed up to the point of meeting
me. While becoming acquainted with them, getting a feel for
what their objectives are, and reviewing their old resume,
almost all of my clients want to interject additional
information.

Additional information is obviously helpful and expected
during the review and resumes development process when it
is relevant. Current position achievements and
accomplishments definitely need to be included as does any
formal training, education, or other service performed
relevant to the future objective of the client. The problem
occurs when, in the process of building or updating their
own resume, clients want to include an overload of
information. This is usually the reason most job seekers
eventually contact a resume writer. It is often a wise
decision because it is very hard to be objective when
writing for oneself. Weeding through all of the past
performances can be a very subjective task. Certified
writers are trained and very experienced in sorting through
information and utilizing only the most relevant
information resulting in powerful, focused resumes.

What I remind my clients is that it is important to stay
focused while writing the resume. What is the goal of the
resume and what is the specific position you are trying to
obtain? Clients with several years of experience have the
luxury of retrieving and using only the most applicable
experiences and achievements. However, most want to provide
information on all aspects of every job ever held. This
unneeded information just adds clutter to the resume and
waters down the strength of the document.

Employers are very busy and usually not excited about the
whole hiring process. The average resume is reviewed for
15-20 seconds before given the "yeah or neigh". What are
the employers looking for? They are looking for actual
accomplishments and achievements with numbers and facts to
back up the achievement. Also they are interested in your
fit with their company. Will you get along, work hard, fit
in, and make them money? You resume must show them using
your resume that you are what they are looking for. The
resume needs to also make you stand out and shine leave a
lasting impression, all in the first glance.

Resumes are most relevant when they are targeting a
specific criteria, job description or goal. Pointing all
achievements, as well as daily responsibilities towards
your goal will give you a sharp, well focused resume and a
definite advantage over the competition. A well crafted
resume created by a Certified Professional Resume Writer
works because it has been specifically developed for you
and your current career goals and needs, it isn't generic
or to broadly focused to fit the positions you are seeking.
It also has specific industry, profession, and position
keywords strategically integrated into the document to draw
attention from both human and computer generated senses.
