If you resist marketing, then you can be great

If you resist marketing, then you can be great
"I've tried to market myself for years. I've worked with
coaches, counselors and healers of all stripes. They all
tell me I need to work through my resistance to marketing,
and yet I still hate it."

My heart was breaking. I was speaking with someone who had
the seeds of an amazing business, one that had been limping
along for years, never expanding beyond a small handful of
dedicated and raving fan clients.

Is this you? Do you offer something miraculous, sacred, or
holy, or something that's really darn good, and yet you
resist marketing it?

Your resistance to marketing is healthy.

You aren't broken. You don't have deep wounds to fix or
heal around promoting yourself. You don't need to work on
valuing yourself.

Then why do you hate marketing yourself? The problem isn't
with you, it's a misunderstanding about marketing, and
attraction.

The spiritual truth behind attraction.

What is attraction? The mysterious pull between two hearts,
or two heavenly bodies. We're talking about Gravity, about
Love. Attraction is a mystery. Thousands of years of
science have not been able to explain or reproduce gravity,
and thousands of years of mysticism and poetry have only
been able to talk about Love.

You can't manufacture Love. You can't manufacture
attraction.

You have a natural resistance to marketing, because you
know in your heart that trying to 'be attractive' is a
losing battle. And, when you go to market yourself by
trying to be attractive to people, it feels intimidating,
even slimy.

Any attempt to use your will power to manufacture
attraction comes out feeling artificial, manipulative, or
just empty.

I bet you've had clients who have shown up saying, "I don't
know why, but as soon as I saw your flyer/heard about you,
I knew I had to come."

That's the mysterious Divine nature of Love at work. The
trouble is that it happens just often enough for you to
think that's how it should always be- just the right person
feeling the impulse, and showing up on your door.

If that's how it works, how come your business isn't
consistently thriving?

Marketing is about safety, not attraction.

Marketing is needed because Love is so scary and
intimidating. The last time you felt the impulse in your
heart to do something out of the ordinary, what did you do?
Did you immediately say "Yes!" and jump with both feet?

Not me. I tend to worry about and question those impulses.
So do your customers.

That's where marketing comes in. It's not about attraction,
it's about helping the people who are attracted to feel
safe enough to trust that call in their heart.

If you see someone hurt in front of you, what do you do?

If your natural inclination is to help someone who is hurt,
then I have good news: you have the natural impulse needed
to be a very effective, heart-centered marketer.

The impulse to help is where it starts, but how does
marketing really help?

Read on: Keys to Love in Marketing

• Remember: Empathy before strategy.

When I was a paramedic, I saw firsthand that when people
are hurt or sick, they feel scared and vulnerable, and can
be mistrusting or cautious. Empathy for their situation
goes a long way to creating trust.

Once empathy is present, the people you are talking to will
be much more open to receiving even just a small bite of
your help.

• Doing what you love, and marketing it, are the same thing.

Okay, they aren't exactly the same thing, there is one
difference: the level of commitment on the other side. In
marketing, it's a one-way relationship where you are giving
help from a place of generosity and effectiveness.

When someone becomes a customer or client, then it becomes
a two-way relationship, and their commitment means that you
receive from them, and it also means that they are willing
to receive more from you.

Start to brainstorm and heart-storm: what are ways that
your marketing could actually help the people you want to
serve (hint: this article you're reading is an example.)

• Give at an appropriate and sustainable level.

Before someone becomes a customer, they aren't really
wanting a lot... yet. Remember that when you meet a new
friend, you aren't necessarily going to spend hours
recounting details from your childhood in an effort to
create intimacy. More likely, you are going to talk about
smaller subjects, until the relationship warms up.

The same with your marketing. Don't throw a kitchen at
them: just give little bits of help, plus an opportunity
for them to ask for more.

And, pay attention not only to what is appropriate for
them, but to how it can be sustainable for you. An
individual one-hour conversation with every person who
shows the slightest interest is way too much for them, and
for you. But, a short article on a common issue you help
people with can be given out easily and sustainably.

Feel better now that you know you don't have to try to be
attractive? Start with empathy, giving help, and being
appropriate and sustainable, and you are on your way to
powerful, heart-centered marketing in 2007.

Here's to a coming year that is full of love, caring, peace
and connection for each of us.

A New Year a New Perspective

A New Year a New Perspective
Gerry is all too conscious that he's not promoting his
company in the best way possible. The black and white
photograph of his factory that hangs on the wall in the
reception area is flat, stale, outmoded and boring, and
really does nothing to convey the impressiveness, character
and scale of the state-of-the-art building. The right
image can speak volumes, but this one is merely saying the
all the get-up-and-go has got-up-and-gone. It lacks 'oomph'
- there's no 'wow' factor. That same uninspiring picture
appears in his company prospectus and other promotional
literature, and to be quite honest, if he were a potential
customer, he would not be inclined to take the trouble to
visit.

It's little wonder that the business seems to have taken a
bit of a down-turn. Effective marketing is crucial for a
company is to remain competitive, and survive. A new year
is imminent, and Gerry decides that a fresh approach is
essential if he is to enhance his market image. It's a
case of 'out with the old and in with the new' - time to
give the company profile the injection of energy it so
desperately needs and deserves.

Looking on the Internet, Gerry soon finds an organisation
that specialises in producing hand-drawn 3D artist's
impressions, designed to bring out the very best
characteristics of a building. As he views the case
studies on the website, Gerry can readily appreciate how
effectively a professional drawing can breathe life and
true perspective into an image that would otherwise be dull
and inert. He's convinced that this is the way forward,
and wastes no time in calling on the organisation's
expertise.

First of all, specially commissioned artists arrive to
conduct a full physical and photographic survey of the
site. Hundreds of photographs are taken from every
conceivable angle, enabling the experts to go away and
develop a selection of rough drawings which are submitted
to Gerry for his agreement on perspective. Consulting with
Gerry every step of the way, the artists produce various
drafts until a final illustration is submitted for his
approval.

Gerry is delighted with the end result. Every measure has
been taken to ensure that the correct detail and colour is
incorporated in the design. Now that all the hard work has
been done by the professionals, the ownership of the
artwork passes to Gerry, so it's entirely up to him decide
how he wants to use it. He discovers that this innovative
organisation can design and print a comprehensive range of
promotional material in any sheet size or format,
guaranteeing a quality product at a competitive price.
They can even incorporate clear, sharp location maps which
will leave Gerry's potential clients in no doubt as to
where to find him. Together, Gerry and the experts plan an
exciting range of presentational material that will catch
the eye immediately and put the stamp on his company's
corporate identity.

When his smart, glossy new prospectuses arrive, Gerry takes
great pleasure in consigning his remaining stock of the old
prospectus to the recycling bin. And as for the photo
hanging in reception, it's now where it belongs - in the
skip, having been replaced by a superb, full colour,
three-dimensional artist's impression that seems to leap
off the wall, portraying just the dynamic image needed.

Gerry can't wait to launch his brand new marketing campaign
early in the New Year. Somehow, he feels he's just about
to turn the corner...

Business Plans...A Requirement for Success!

Business Plans...A Requirement for Success!
A business plan is a formal statement of a set of business
goals, the reasons why they are believed attainable, and
the plan for reaching those goals. Business plans that
identify and target internal goals, but provide only
general guidance on how they will be met are called
strategic plans. These plans may also target changes in
perception and branding by the customer, client, tax-payer,
or larger community. Learn how to create a winning business
plan. Writing a business plan will force you to objectively
develop and evaluate your tactical and strategic
plans. There is no fixed content for a business plan. Rather
the content and format of the business plan is determined
by the goals and audience. For example,a business plan for
a non-profit might discuss the fit between the business
plan and the organization's mission. Banks are quite
concerned about defaults, so a business plan for a bank
loan will build a convincing case for the organization's
ability to repay the loan.

Indeed, an increase in the number of small businesses has
created much of the growth of new jobs in the United States
economy. In existence are online small business workshop
techniques for developing business ideas, starting new
ventures and improving existing small businesses for
entrepreneurs. A business plans handbook is a compilation
of actual business plans developed by small businesses
throughout North America. This handbook includes checklists
and operating forms for small businesses. The FTC is an
organization that works for the consumer to prevent
fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair practices in the
marketplace and to provide information to businesses to
help them comply with the law. Please do not forget that
most small businesses will need an EIN even if they don't
have employees. Most wholesalers will ask for this before
you can do business with them.

Even if they do consider writing a business plan, they are
often overwhelmed or confused by the planning process and
never understand the value of this critical document. That
is because most business owners fail to plan seriously for
their own success. Check the state laws where you plan to
do business. One of the many questions about business
planning I receive is how long a typical plan is. The
length of a typical business plan can greatly vary from 10
pages to a 100-page document. Growing your business using
information technology and the internet takes careful
planning and many businesses are unsure about how to
proceed.

-- Creating your own business opportunities
-- Planning your personal road map to success
-- Pricing what you sell -- Money: what you'll need and
where to get it
-- Making it legal
-- Who owns the business.

Finally, your plan may help you develop as a manager by
giving you practice in thinking about competitive
conditions, promotional opportunities, sources of finance,
etc.

Business plans may be internally or externally focused and
are used in some primary and secondary programs to teach
economic principles. Whether you are starting or growing a
small business, a sound business plan is your roadmap to
success. Business plans can be simple or complex -- it all
depends on who is driving and where they want to go. These
plans will still be needed for banks or investors, and most
businesses need to go through that. A plan that has
changes in perception and branding as its primary goals is
called a marketing plan. Your business plan will become
your roadmap to chart the course of your business and its
success!

Pirates

Pirates
Tuesday, the 3rd installment of Disney's grossly successful
Pirates of the Caribbean franchise became available in
stores. In these stories, the pirates are generally
portrayed as good guys that are just after treasure and are
being hunted by the evil British navy. This story line,
while fun, has nothing to do with how pirates are today.

In the movies of past and present, pirates are generally
not bad people. They're portrayed in such a way that
everyone loves pirates, except for maybe Captain Hook. In
real life, particularly today, pirates are causing huge
problems. Currently, they are most troublesome around
Indonesia and off of the coast of Somalia. In Somalia, the
presence and actions of pirates are preventing food and
other necessities from reaching the starving victims of
famine and domestic fighting. In Indonesia, they're
upsetting international trade.

Modern pirates aren't nearly as willing not to kill people
as the Disney version would imply. Spitting out the word
"Parlay" is probably not going to prevent the pirates from
shooting you or a fellow crew member. Just last week in
Nigeria, one man was killed and another was injured when
the oil tanker they were on was attacked by pirates. Also,
today's pirates aren't wielding little guns and swords.
They are equipped with much more damaging weaponry and
boats that are much faster than the oil tankers and yachts
they generally attack. A power boat is also much more
maneuverable than a massive ship.

When the pirates do get on board, they are after cash,
laptops, and other such valuable things. They're generally
not after a single medallion or the heart of Davey Jones.
They're after things that can be re-sold or straight cash.
They do not care about the cargo of a ship. While the
pirates of Disney are concerned with their hats, the
pirates of today wear ski masks or disguise their identity
in some other way.

In addition to all of the other differences, today's
pirates do not operate a single ship. They have huge
networks of power boat gangs that team up on the larger
ships. Often, a boat or two will maneuver into the path of
the larger ship. This causes the ship to slow down which
allows another boat to sneak up from behind the ship and
board from the rear.

Another common misconception concerning pirates on the high
seas is that they are on the way out. From 1993 to 2003,
the number of pirate attacks actually tripled. All of these
factors should cause concern for ships in the Indian Ocean,
particularly near Indonesia and Somalia.

Expand Sales by Reducing the Cost to Use Your Offering

Expand Sales by Reducing the Cost to Use Your Offering
Many for-profit manufacturers and service providers
concentrate only on influencing their own prices and costs.
In the process they ignore or are insensitive to what
customers and end users pay to use these offerings. While
this narrow viewpoint may be profitable, much more profit
is missed because demand is dampened due to soaring costs
incurred by customer and end users.

For example, my banker called to suggest that I open a new
personal checking account. These accounts are free. I
didn't really need this checking account, but my interest
was piqued when he told us I would receive a free
BlackBerry portable digital assistant (PDA). I didn't need
a BlackBerry PDA, but figured that I could sell it on eBay
and make a profit to put into my new checking account.

After signing up for a checking account, I learned that I
would only receive a BlackBerry PDA if I subscribed to a
service costing $720 for a year. Suddenly, I had a checking
account and a "free" certificate for a PDA I didn't want to
spend $720 to use. The bank had wasted its time and money
on me, and I had a checking account I didn't need.

Presumably enough other people signed up who used the
accounts to make the promotion successful. The bank may
have thought that it had won.

But here's what it had missed. If the bank had instead
offered a $200 off value on the PDA and six months of free
service, I probably would have tried the BlackBerry PDA. If
I had liked the product and service, I would probably have
continued to use the PDA and thought favorably of the bank
when I did. Or if the bank had offered me $100 off the
PDA's price and no required service, I could have pursued
my original plan and sold this product on eBay for a
profit. That would have made me appreciate my bank more,
as well.

When you can instead reduce the cost of using offerings,
for-profit organizations and their customers both gain. A
big waste of my time is in going to a bank to make
transactions. Although my bank has an excellent online
service, I'm limited in how many times a month I can
transfer balances online from one of my accounts into
another one. As a result, I don't tend to keep much money
in that restricted account.

If the bank instead gave me postage-free envelopes to make
such account transfers, I would keep a lot more money in
the account because I wouldn't have to make lots of extra
trips to the bank for the transfers. The bank could
slightly reduce the interest rate it pays on such accounts,
and I would still be attracted to the convenience because I
would be saving lots of valuable time I could be using for
other purposes than going to and from the bank.

Giving the awkward news that you're raising your prices.

Giving the awkward news that you're raising your prices.
The time has come- you've been waiting for it and dreading
it at the same time. The time when you must, absolutely
must, can't avoid it.

You've got to raise your prices. You're sure about it,
100%, and it feels good when you think about it all on your
own. Except...

How DO you tell your current clients that your prices are
going up, up and away? Your belly is flip-flopping, and
your palms get cold and sweaty...

Your Psychic Clients

Here's the thing: your clients probably already know.

If your price rise feels that great to your heart, it's
probably been coming for awhile, yes? So, your clients have
just been waiting for you to tell them. For many of them,
it will actually be a relief.

The Buzzer at 6am

Sometimes a price rise helps unstick something or someone
from your business. You may have clients that have been
sticking around out of habit- you're used to working with
them, they're used to working with you. You keep working
together.

But there's no juice. There's a blaaahhhhh feeling to your
work together. Hum-drum.

The price rise is like an alarm clock going off, waking
both you and them out of a sound sleep. "Is this where we
both want to be?"

You may find that once they wake up, they no longer want to
work with you. And, it's scary at first to let your client
go. But, admit it- there is also a sense of relief. That
openness in your schedule can let someone new in, at your
new price, bringing in the fresh breeze of aliveness.

You may also find that your client may still want to work
with you, at your new price. But that the juice has come
back, because you've both woken up and have a renewed sense
of purpose to why you're working together.

Errr... but the conversation itself?

All this sounds good, in theory. And you're willing to
trust your heart. But how do you have that conversation
itself, when you tell them "Hey buddy, cough up a little
more.... er, I mean to say, my prices are going up..."

Well, here are some ideas...

Keys to Raising the Price on Them

• A time-lapse is okay.

You can raise your prices for new, incoming clients, and
keep your current clients at their current prices for
awhile. Then, once you've seen new clients come in and pay
you the new price, you'll have more confidence for the
conversation.

Then, when the timing feels right in your heart- one month,
three months, six months later- you can let them know that
you raised your prices awhile ago, but kept them at their
current rate as a courtesy. And now it's time for the price
to go up.

• Negotiation is okay, too.

If your client is especially valued to you, and/or is a
great referral source, you can have a conversation with
them about it.

Tell your client that your price is going up, but that it
doesn't feel right in your heart because of the
relationship you all have to just jump them up. Ask for a
conversation with them to find a price between the old
price and the new price that feels good to both of you.

This will only work if your heart is truly okay with a
lower price. If it is, use your heart to find out what the
new price is for this particular client, and don't go below
that.

When you're in business for more than a year, raising
prices is just a normal part of life. Your experience
changes, the type of service or product you are offering
changes, your confidence increases. Your clients know this,
and expect it from time to time.

When it's time, it's time. Stay in your heart, and let them
know. Chances are, they've been waiting for you to tell
them.

Calling All Recruiters—Is Anyone Out There?

Calling All Recruiters—Is Anyone Out There?
Online job services were meant to automate the job search
process, getting jobseekers in front of prospective new
employers faster. How well is it working for you? If
you've sent out dozens of resumes and gotten little or no
response, it probably feels like you're sending your resume
into a vast black hole. Do you feel like shouting "Hey, is
anyone out there?"

To better the odds that your resume is being seen by a real
person who can offer you a real job, here are three
guidelines to make your resume more effective.

1. Include Key Words

With paper resumes a thing of the past, employers use
candidate tracking databases to store resumes. Recruiters
and hiring managers use key words to query and find the
candidate resumes that match the job. If you aren't using
the right words to describe your employment experiences,
then your resume might be rejected before it's ever seen.
Review the key words your resume uses to:

* Describe your current career objective. Do your
qualifications match the job description? Look closely at
areas listing your technical skills, job responsibilities,
and core competencies.

* Attract your industry. Are you using your industry's
current buzzwords? Avoid obsolete terms and phases that
may label you as behind the times.

* Attract your occupational field. Does your resume give
the impression that you're cutting edge or over the hill?
Make sure your resume shows why you're a good choice for
the job.

2. Use the Correct Electronic Version

If your resume can't be opened as an attachment, then it
can't be seen. Because of the threat of computer viruses,
many companies only accept resumes through their own online
forms which ask you to cut and paste (rather than attach)
your resume. Make sure you are sending your resume in a
format that will work for the recipient.

* If a resume attachment is requested: Save your resume as
a Word document (.doc or .rtf). This is the standard that
most companies use. It should retain the formatting that
you used for your resume. Avoid fancy formatting options
such as columns, boxes, and tables.

* If an email or online form is used: Use ASCII, plain
text, or text only (.txt). This removes formatting, but
the information is preserved. Be sure to review your
resume before sending it so that it is still easy to read
and user friendly. 3. Make Your Resume Stand Out from
the Crowd

With hundreds of candidates to choose from, what makes your
resume shout "Pick me!"? If your qualifications are
similar or equal to the vast majority of other candidates,
employers will need a compelling reason to select you out
of the crowd. You need a differentiating edge, or you'll
be ignored.

The best way to differentiate your resume from others is
with accomplishments. And those accomplishments really
stand out when:

* They are quantified or measurable. Can you define how
much you accomplished in dollars saved, contracts won, or
percent changed?

* They highlight your transferable skills. Can your skills
be used by this company, even if your job experience is in
a different industry? Transferable skills help employers
visualize you in their organization.

* They show corporate impact. How can you help them save
time, save money, increase their profit margin, improve
sales, or increase revenue?

While the Internet is still a great tool to connect quickly
with employers, you need to take steps to ensure your
resume won't be ignored. Before you apply online again,
use these three tips to make sure your resume gets the
attention it deserves!

Oil Tankers

Oil Tankers
Recently, there have been a number of oil spills that have
attracted media attention. In San Francisco Bay, the Cosco
Butan hit the Bay Bridge and spilled a quantity of oil. In
South Korea, a barge hit the Hedei Spirit and spilled a
larger quantity of oil. In the Black Sea, an oil tanker
broke apart in a storm and killed a number of birds. All of
these accidents have brought to light classifications of
oil tankers. The main distinction between the various types
is whether or not the tanker has a single hull or a double
hull.

Single hull tankers are the older version of oil tankers.
Their hull has only one layer of metal and is not
reinforced by a second layer. This single layer of hull
(the outside of the ship) makes them much more susceptible
to oil spills as an object, such as a bridge or land, only
needs to pierce one layer of the ship to cause large
amounts of oil to flow freely into the ocean or bay.
Because of the huge number of spills in the world that have
drawn attention to this type of ship, the Exxon Valdez
accident involved a single-hulled ship, they are generally
viewed in a negative light. To combat this, various
countries have tried to create incentives for oil companies
to use only double-hulled ships. Also, the International
Maritime Organization (IMO) mandated that the single-hulled
tankers of the world be taken out of service by 2010. There
are still a few exceptions to the rule though.

Double hull tankers are the newer version of oil tankers.
Their hulls have two layers, hence the name double hull.
This second layer of a hull makes it much more difficult
for an object, like a barge, to puncture through to the oil
carrying areas of the ship. This, in turn, makes it much
more difficult for oil to escape the confines of the ship
and leak out into the ocean or any body of water. Double
hull tankers are much more expensive than single hull ones
which is making oil companies reluctant to switch over.
Their point is that there are relatively few oil spill
accidents in the world when you consider the number of
tankers that are constantly cruising the world's oceans. To
combat this, various countries have made the penalties
faced if a spill does occur less if the ship involved was
double-hulled.

In addition to distinctions made concerning the type of
hull a ship has, there are size classifications as well.
The size of the ship depends mostly on its carrying
capacity. This method was developed by Shell Oil in the
1950s and is called AFRA (Average Freight Rate Assessment).
The system is based on creating a range of dead weight
tonnage (DWT) for each classification. Many of the oil
tankers that have been in the news lately have been Very
Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) which means that they have a
dead weight tonnage of between 160,000 tons and 319,999
tons. Anything above 319,999 is called an Ultra Large Crude
Carrier. The Exxon Valdez was only a Medium Range tanker
with a capacity of between 25,000 and 44,999 tons.
